Ropar
enjoys great historical importance as the famous treaty
of Amritsar which fixed the Satluj as the eastern boundary
of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's kingdom was signed here between
the Maharaja and Lord William Bentick. It is also the
originating point of Sirhind Canal and the Bist Doab
Canal, the two oldest canals of the present Punjab.
Recently a thermal power plant has also been set up
here. Gurudwara Bhattha Sahib and Gurudwara Parivar
Vichhora, two important Sikh historical shrines lie
at a small distance from this city.
